Hi my name is Stephanie Smith-Luster. I live in Greenville, South Carolina. I have
always be told that my maternal line were decendents of John C. Calhoun, VP. It is known
that his son had a slave mistress, that bore him many children. I had more information
that I got from my grandmother's aunt. But my computer crashed and I can't find
my backup disk at this time. And my grandmother's aunt passed last April. I am in the
process of contacting other family members to gather this information once more. The town
of 96 and Calhoun Falls are two different towns. They are about 30 minutes or more apart.
I am not familiar with Bartol. But McCormick, Calhoun Falls and Abbeville are all right
there together, like 5 -10 minutes apart. Williamston is close to Clemson which is about
30 or more minutes apart. For more information, you can try the Greenville (SC) county
library-genealogy or Clemson Univesity. I think they have a historical house for John C.
Calhoun. My grandm!
other was born in Calhoun Falls. We recently had to get a copy of my grandmothers birth
certificate and the funeral mom in Abbeville had it. I will find out the name and address
of the funeral home. Later in the early 1900's (1920-1930) a large amount of the
Blacks left and went to New Jersey, New York City and Buffalo NY. A large majority of them
moved by to GREENVILLE, SC in the late 30's and 40's. I hope this helps a little.
Our family name is ANDERSON.. which is my great grandmother's name. My great
grandmother would have been the great granddaughter of John C. Calhoun. I will ask my
grandmother and some of our older family members about the last name to see if they know
the name. We still have LOTS of family members there. I hope this helps.
