I am so glad to see your posting about MJ Calhoun. I wanted to find out more about her
and her children. The last information I had of her was the 1870 LA census living in the
same county as RBG Harper. I didn't know that she was his daughter. The Harper
family reseachers will be glad to learn of this. They have RBG's line and she is not
included. They start with Benjamin F. Harper born in 1835. However RBG and Mary Ann
Thomas were married in Copiah county Nov 29 1830, Duncan Calhoun was bondsman. If they
were married in 1830 then it makes sense that they would have a child before 1835. In
1840 RBG is in Kemper county and they have 4 kids, so it looks like they have 2 girls that
are not accounted for. If you have records that prove M.J. is his daughter I would love
to pass it on to the Harper researchers.
The Calhouns and Harpers are definitely intertwined. RBG is a descendent of Edward
and Mary Harper. He has two sisters that marry Calhouns. Eleanor Harper married John
Calhoun and Emily Harper married Duncan Calhoun. There is another Duncan Calhoun that
marries Elizabeth B. Harper. She is the daughter of James A. Harper (Edward's
brother).
If you like to read about these Harpers you should go to the Harper Family Genealogy
Forum. To the top right there will be a number of postings, it will say (jump to #)then
type in 6239.
The M.J. Calhoun that is your relative I "believe" is Maranda J. who was
married to William G. Calhoun. They certainly had dealings with RBG Harper. From
Lauderdale county land deeds; Book E page 175 July 1846 John & Eleanor Calhoun to
W.G. Calhoun. Book E page 188 July 1846 W.G. & Maranda J. Calhoun to John Calhoun.
Book F page 23 June 1848 W.G. & Maranda J. Calhoun to RBG Harper. Book F page 453 Jan
1851 W.G. & M.J. Calhoun to RBG Harper. Book G page 96 William G. Calhoun elected
Justice of the Peace in district No. 1 on June 11, 1853. Book L page 13 M.J. Calhoun to
J.A Johnson in Aug 1866. They had other transactions but I just listed the ones you would
be interested in.
I kind of think that William G. "might be" John and Eleanor's son, but
there not enough proof now. However I have come across records of a Calhoun-Smith bible
which have John's son E.A.B. Calhoun and his children listed. There is an entry of
William G. Calhoun that died Apr 5 1860. Two months later July 26 1860, the MS census has
M.J. Calhoun and children living in the house-hold of RBG Harper.
I know lots of other Calhouns but I don't know of a W.H. or Benjamin Calhoun.
Postings on the internet has certainly been very helpful to me and I do appreciate all
that you have done. Hope to hear from you soon.
Keep the family alive, Royce
