Royce,
Thank you so much for your information! Yes, William G. Calhoun appears to be the correct
husband of my gg-gma Maranda! He was one of my possibilities but I didn't have enough
strong evidence to support it until you disclosed those Lauderdale County land deeds. I
so appreciate your help!
I just returned from a trip to see my parents and was given information regarding MJ
Calhoun, via my mother's Hollister cousins. It was on this trip that I was told
MJ's name was Maranda. Once Maranda moved to Louisiana, she was married a 2nd time to
a Mr. John Welch. This "Gpa Welch" was the man her grandchildren knew for their
Gpa Calhoun had evidently died while in Mississippi (which supports the possible death
date you gave for William G as Apr 5th, 1860 before MJ moved from MS to LA).
As for Maranda's children: Her eldest was Frances Armeta Calhoun ("Aunt
Fanny") born circa 1849 in Meridan, Lauderdale, MS. She married 1st) Albert Henry
McCall and 2nd) Henry Kuntz. She had six children in all (three from the first marriage
& three from the second). Her husband, Albert McCall was buried in the McCall
cemetery (along with Maranda's parents, Richard Byran Glen Harper & Mary Ann
Thomas). Fanny died 17 JUL 1929 (I just received a copy of her obituary).
Maranda's 2nd child was Walter Patrick "Pack" Calhoun, born circa 1851 in
Meridian, MS. He married Martha J. Rutherford and died after 1900. I am in contact with
one of his descendants.
Maranda's 3rd child was Alice Cornelia Calhoun (my gg-gma) born 10 SEP 1855 in
Meridian, MS. She married Edward Augustus Hollister in her mother's home in Leesburg,
Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Gma Alice had 11 children and died 29 MAY 1935 in Navasota,
Grimes, Texas. I am currently working with numerous Hollister cousins in an effort to
flesh out this line & coordinate family photographs.
As for evidence that Maranda belongs to RBG Harper: She was found in the 1860 census with
his family, along with her three children and I have a letter, written by Maranda's
granddaughter, (my ggma Ola Lydia Hollister Cottom) that states: "My mother's
maiden name was Alice Calhoun. Her mother's maiden name was Harper. I don't know
her given name."
This is so exciting!
