I am looking for information on the origin and family of Charles CALHOUN of
Richmond, now Scotland Co, NC. According to "The Scottish Highlander
Carmichaels of the Carolinas", by Roderick L. Carmichael, privately
published, 1935, Charles was the husband of Christian CARMICHAEL, who was
the daughter of Daniel Carmichael and Sallie McCall. That would make him my
fourth great grandfather.
While the Carmichael family is thought to have arrived in NC between 1785
and 1790, neither Charles nor any other Calhoun or Colquhoun appears in the
1790 census of Richmond Co. I have also been unable to find Charles anywhere
else in NC in 1790. Yet the first born child of Charles and Christian is
said to have been born there in 1795.
Does that make him a first arriver who immigrated from Scotland after 1790
but before 1794?
Where in Scotland did he come from?
When was he born; when did he die; where did he die?
Did he travel to America with other family?
In later years, other Calhouns appear in the Richmond Co census. Were these
related to Charles? What about those living in nearby Marlboro Co, SC?
Unless I am missing something, I find a surprisingly small amount of
information available on the Calhouns of Eastern NC.
I would appreciate any enlightenment.
