Taken from the Trinity Advocate, 7 April 1858
Died at the residence of his father, two miles east of this place, on Saturday the 3f
inst., Mr. Alexander L. Calhoun, son of John and Nancy Calhoun.
Thus has been cut off, in the bloom of youth and prime of life, one who by his kindness of
disposition and rectitude of conduct, had endeared himself to all to whom he was known.
Mr. Calhoun had started out in life with prospects fair and flattering for future
usefulness; with a mind of no ordinary cast, and well stored with scientific and literary
knowledge. But alas! Consumption, that insidious but certain shaft of the grim monster
had marked him for his own, and he now lies in our village Grave Yard, by the side of four
sisters and one brother, who have fallen victims to the same disease. His illness was
protracted, and his suffering, at times, severe, but he bore all without a murmur, and met
the last enemy without fear, but with full confidence of a blessed immorality beyond the
grave, and is now, no doubt, reaping the rewards of the pure in heart. He leaves a
distressed, and sorrowing father, mother and brother, to mourn his early death. May He
who tempers the wi!
nd to the shorn lamb, sustain them in this the hour of their sorrow.
