Message Board Post:
I am looking to exchange information regarding Hugh CALHOUN who died on 3/16/1876, most
likely in Wabash County. He is buried in the Cripe Cemetery in Pleasant Township, Wabash
County, IN. Cemetery information indicates that Hugh was a War of 1812 veteran.
I found Hugh in the 1830 Montgomery County (Clay Twp), OH census with a wife and 2 female
children. He then appears in the 1860 Wabash County (Chester Twp), IN census. I have not
yet found him anywhere in the 1840 or 1850 census.
Hugh was married at least twice and possibly 3 times. His 1st wife's name is mentioned
as Katherine ELBAUGH in information on the Family Search website but this is unconfirmed.
Per Montgomery County, OH marriage records, his 2nd wife was Mary BAKER. They were married
on 1/24/1832. Mary died on 5/23/1843 in Miami County, OH and is buried in Potsdam Cemetery
in that county.
A possible 3rd wife was Eve M. WILLARD. Kosciusko County, IN marriage records show a
marriage license issued to a Hugh CALHOUN and Eve WILLARD on 9/11/1847. It is not certain
if this was the same Hugh CALHOUN. The 1850 Kosciusko County (Turkey Creek Twp) census
shows Eve CALHOUN as head of household with a son, David CALHOUN. Since Hugh was still
living in 1850, if this was the the same Hugh, he and Eve were apparently divorced by the
time of the census.
Regarding children of Hugh, it is known that he had at least 2 children with his 1st wife:
Susanna and Elizabeth. Susanna married Joseph FLORA (FLORY) and Elizabeth never married.
Elizabeth died on 11/8/1880 and is buried next to her father in Cripe Cemetery, Wabash
County, IN.
Hugh had at least 4 children with his 2nd wife, Mary Baker. They were: Ellen (md. William
DAILEY), Thomas, Mary (md. Ezekiel LOWERY) and Catharine (md Champion HELVEY). If this
Hugh did marry Eve WILLARD in 1847, then he had a son David CALHOUN with her.
It is also possible that Hugh had additional children but the above are the ones that I
have confimed so far.
Also, Hugh may have been a brother to Johnson CALHOUN (1791-1858) who resided in Wabash
County, IN since the 1840 time frame. Johnson was married to a Susan WILSON and had at
least 7 children: Leah, Spear, Martha, Sarah, Africa, Robert and Rachel.
Johnson CALHOUN is on the 1830 Montgomery County, OH census just a few households away
from Hugh. Johnson and family apparently moved from Ohio to Wabash County sometime around
1837. Land records show Johnson purchasing land in Wabash County, IN in March 1837. It
appears that Hugh may have followed Johnson to Indiana from Ohio a few years later.
I would like to exchange more detailed information with other people who are researching
Hugh and/or Johnson CALHOUN. Thank you
