I have tried to read all of the Calhoun Postings, but just got as confused as many of you
have, So I will add this to the Mix. From what I have been able to put together about PL
Calhoun Sr., he was Married to a Margaret Martha Teague. They had married and divorced 2
times. PL Sr. died June 1863 and Martha died 1858. Patrick Ludlow Calhoun Jr. I am trying
to find out when and where my gggrandma ADELAIDE was purchased. PL Calhoun SR. owned 47
slaves in Edgefield SC by 1863 and grossed over $100,000. One family group was my
gggrandma Adelaide and 4 of her children, Francis 9, Harriet 7 and Elbert 2. PL Calhoun
sold these 4 to Abr. Jones Oct 27 1863. Of course PL SR. was deceased by the time of these
sales. Mrs Mary Calhoun purchased my ggrandma Lucinda 11 1/2 on the same date. I believe
names were given to many children so unless birth years are accurate -there are many Mary
Calhouns. I know all of this confirmed information because a lady took 6 years to document
every sla!
ve in every Estate Sale or document in any household. Also slaveholders transported their
purchases to other states and cities in SC. All of these records of course are 2 years
before the Civil War ended. The name of this new book, published in 2010 is SLAVES OF
EDGEFIELD SC, by Gloria Lucas. This is how I became interested in the Calhouns. In this
book I can suggest any one looking for their 'white families' during this era of
slavery, you may be able to shake the tree and follow family history. If there are black
families of interest, it takes looking page by page for the names of the person/s of
interest. All slaves DID NOT take the slaveholders surname. I know I am newly aware of
CALHOUNS, so it may take me a very long time to figure out the lineage since I have read
cousins intermarried. This book can be purchased from the Old Edgefield Genealogy society
or info at the Tompkins Library Edgefield SC. I personally would like information on any
slave holdings of any CALH!
OUN. Perhaps I can find out a little more about my gggrandma Adelaide,
the slave from Sierre Leone, West Africa.
