TONY: Unfortunately, I have not been able to establish just who the father
of James P. Calhoun is -- but I don't think he's the son of Andrew. Here's
what I know about the Calhouns I'm trying to trace.
JOHN Calhoun -- there was a John Calhoun who was postmaster of Springfield,
Washington Co., KY, in 1816. I'm guessing he's the same John C. Calhoun who
witnessed in Virginia some McElroy documents before the McElroy clan moved
to Kentucky around 1789. There are some scattered references, I'm told,
about a John Calhoun in early Springfield who was perhaps a banker and who
had a large library. I have no information about who his wife or children
were.
JAMES P. Calhoun -- He was a saddler in Springfield, born in 12/5/1800, died
9/6/1875 in Springfield. He appears on census rolls in Washington Co, KY,
and Susan Davison Calhoun, my gg-grandmother, was one of his children.
I'm guessing that the above JOHN Calhoun was the father of the above JAMES
P. Calhoun, but as yet have no documentation of that. I'm also guessing
that the above JOHN was married to a Margaret & is the one pictured, along
with Margaret, in the pair of photographs in my family's possesion -- but no
proof of that yet.
I was intrigued by the earlier post at CALHOUN-L mentioning a John, who was
the son of an ANDREW Calhoun and who was married to a Margaret -- could that
John be the JOHN who moved to Kentucky along with the McElroys?
I will be in Springfield, KY, for a couple weeks in June to try to answer
some of these questions.
