Message Board Post:
I am researching James M. Calhoun, who married Penelope Smith in Apr. 1834, Stewart
County, GA.
They had 3 children, Jordan Marion (1835-1863), Mary E. (1836-by 1894), and Wiley Ann.
When Penelope Smith Calhoun's father, Isaac, died in 1848, Stewart, GA Probate Records
say the children were orphans and heirs of their maternal grandfather's estate (Isaac
Smith of Stewart, GA).
The 1840 Census suggests that Penelope and the children might already have been living
with Isaac.
I have been looking at records from the Creek Indian Wars. There was major fighting in
Stewart, GA in 1836. No luck yet.
I do not know where James and Penelope lived after they married.
Anybody know what happened to James or where he came from?
