I am very sad to announce the passing of Marvin Barnes on leap day, February
29, 2004. He died at 8:17 AM in Bradenton, Florida of uncurable throat and
lung cancer. He was 82. I don't think the Calhoun Chronicle or Gilmer county
paper knew about his death. He was born in Gilmer county, WV and was the son
of the late Dewey Barnes and the late Leone Ferguson, who died in 1995 in
Parkersburg, WV at age 93. He was my grandfather who served in the Navy during
WWII. He married in 1939 to my grandmother who survives him, Mary Evelyn Nelson
Barnes in Greenup, KY. He was born in Calhoun county on October 25, 1921 and
lived there until after his marriage in which he moved to Parkersburg and
Vienna WV in the mid 1940's which is where my mother was born (Peggy). He was
retired from Union Carbide which is where he retired from in the early 1980's.
He had also in addition to Parkersburg, in later years lived in Louisiana,
and Puerto Rico before moving to his retirement area of Bradenton in 1982
which is wherehe lived for nearly 22 years.
I have many loving memories of my grandfather Marvin including a 1999
interview of his family memories. He was such a cheerful person who brought
happiness to so many around him. He was a person who made the best of everything he
did, and was cheerful right up to end of his last day of life. God rest his
soul and he will be forever missed. He was put to rest at Rockland cemetary,
Belpre Ohio next to his Mother, Leone, Father Dewey and sister, Mary Lou
Barnes, who died in 1989.
