The only facts I know about the J. M. Calhoun Calhoun I am looking for are:
He married Mary Parmelia Thomas of Barbour Co. in Barbour County, Dec. 7, 1858.
They appear on the 1860 Census in Butler Co., which states that he was a 25 year old
farmer, born in GA.
They had a son, George Marion Calhoun in 1860 (who sold his father's land in Butler
Co. in the late 1800's.
J. M. Calhoun went off to fight for the Confederacy and was never heard from again.
I started with Confederate war records. There are records of four J. M. Calhouns,
enlisting from AL. Two came back. The military record and widow's pension record the
AL Archives keeps sending me, and the same one I have found in a book is for J. M.
Calhoun, a 34 year old mechanic who enlisted in the 15th AL Infantry, Co. F from
Brundidge, AL in 1861. The widow's name is M.A.M. Calhoun. He was born in GA and
died at Manassas in 1862.
This guy is older than the one I am looking for and has a different widow and occupation.
Is this one your mechanic, Diane?
I think there is also a guy who enlisted from Russell Co, and one from Dallas Co., who
later became an AL senator.
I found a Jordan M. Calhoun/alternate name J. M. who is the right age, born in GA, died as
a prisoner of war in 1863, who enlisted from Butler Co. Jordan M. Calhoun appears as a 15
year old farmer in Barbour Co. in 1850, living in the James Calhoun household. James is a
farmer also. There are also land surveys and probate records in Butler Co. in 1866 for
Jordan M. Calhoun. All of that fits my guy. I am trying to establish Jordan as his first
name. If I can find records that show the locations of Jordan M.'s and J. M.'s
land in Butler Co., I might be able to prove that it is the same property.
The only other thing I know from the 1849 Barbour Co. Orphan Records is that Jordan M.
(born in GA) and Mary E. Calhoun had a sizable inheritance. There are records showing
that three men, including James Calhoun, held it in trust for them.
I don't know if the kids came from families living in AL or GA, or how they were
related to James. I don't know where Mary E. lived after that, because she
doesn't appear on the 1850 Census in that same household. I don't know how old
she was, and I haven't yet found a marriage record for her.
That's probably more than you wanted to know. Sorry!
Beth
