So we're cousins :)
I've seen Eva reported as Eva or Effy. Which do you think is right (given that Abigail
was "Effie" and Nancy's mother was Effie McLaurin)? I can't believe what
a popular name Euphemia was...especially considering nobody appeared to use the formal
name....lol.
So, Effie Abigail would have convert from Presbyterian to Methodist? Good thing they went
to Smith county where grandpa Daniel couldn't get at them....lol. The McLaurins appear
to have staunch Presbyterians. My ggg gf was an Elder in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church
not far from Mt. Olive. He started the collection to build the church that stands there
now. The only story I've ever heard about Daniel is related to his religion, so
I'm guessing that was an important piece of his character.
It seems as though the family stayed in contact well enough so that Felix Carr knew my gg
gf despite the distances that would have been involved. I've seen from other letters
that their was some sort of Bowie (or Buie)creek society that had sprung up in the
antebellum period. I'm not sure how far that extended.
The McLaurins of that era are, of course, all buried at the McLaurin family Cemetery near
Bowie Creek about a mile from John C. McLaurin's house, which is still standing
there.
