I also have Calhouns in upstate New York:
My husband's great-great-grandfather was Joel Calhoun, born on 2 Aug 1800,
birthplace unknown. He is in the 1820 census for Williamson, Ontario County,
Pa, and the 1840 census for Parishville, St. Lawrence County, New York. He
died on 4 Feb 1844 in Stockholm, NY.
I don't know Joel's father's name, but a family story is that three Calhoun
brothers came from Scotland to America at a date that is uncertain. As was
common at the time, they became separated, and owing to a lack of facilities
for communication, they lost track on one another. One of the brothers made
his home on the south shore of Lake Ontario, in Wayne County, NY. When
another brother, John Calhoun, an officer during the Revolutionary periuod,
was sent to Fort Oswego to inspect it, he heard of another Calhoun family and
sent word that he would like to meet them to see if they could trace a
relationship. Our ancestor, being radically opposed to John's political
views, refused to visit him and so perhaps list the opportunity to learn more
of the Calhoun family.
Joel Calhoun married Perlina V. Barton, born 2 Oct 1803 in Cambridge,
Washington County, New York. The marriage took place on 4 Mar 1824. Sher
and her children moved to Minnesota in 1860.
Perlina Barton's parents were Caleb Barton, born 12 Jov 1776 in Dutchess
County, New York and Salle Coe, born 23 Apr 1782.
