Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I am interested in researching LT. JAMES C. CALHOUN and have
been trying to find how he ties into my family of Calhouns.
A distant relative sent me some papers and was telling me
that he is family. If anyone is researching this family, I
would be interested in sharing.
I have the1850 Ohio census showing him as a child with his
parents and siblings.
I would appreciate any help.

Canadian Immigrant Records, Part One
Free Until 3/9/00
Description: Historically, Canada has been the destination for
millions of immigrants from around the world seeking a better life in
North America. Compiled from a variety of sources, this database is a
collection of over 146,800 records between 1780 and 1906 relating to
immigrants to Canada. This update adds the names of over 26,800
persons. Researchers will find the name of the immigrant and year and
source of the original record. The entries in this database are not
complete transcriptions of the original records; an e-mail link is
provided at the bottom of each results page for those who would like
to purchase a more detailed electronic transcript for a particular
entry. This database can be immensely helpful for researchers with
Canadian ancestors. We will periodically be adding more Canadian
immigration data to our online library, so return to Ancestry.com
often.
Extended Description: Researchers throughout North America will
appreciate the value of this database that has been compiled from a
variety of sources to represent the movement of immigrants to Canada.
Historically, there have been frequent periods of migration between
the United States and Canada, creating an interesting research problem
for the genealogist. Neither Canadian nor American researchers can
afford to be ignorant of records in the other nation. Passage to
Canada was often less expensive than travelling to ports in the United
States, so immigrants might travel to Canada and then complete their
journey to the United States on land. Economic and social pressures
have also played important roles in migration patterns.
The entries in this database are extracted from original records. They
have been compiled to represent only those individuals for whom
immigration information was available in the original records. The
entries in this database are not complete transcriptions of the
original records; an email link is provided at the bottom of each
results page for those who would like to purchase a more detailed
electronic transcript for a particular entry.
The information in this database comes from a variety of original
documents. A large majority of the entries have been extracted from
the 1901 census records for parts of Ontario and Quebec and represent
those individuals who indicated a year of immigration and a place of
birth outside of Canada. Other records represented include: historical
atlases of Ontario, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island; biographical
extracts from Quebec's Eastern Townships; War Office records listing
Loyalist regiments in Lower Canada (Quebec); the 1851 census of Quebec
City (for those who indicated a place of birth outside of Canada);
early Irish immigrants in Eastern Ontario; groups of Scottish
immigrants to Upper Canada (Ontario); and, Crown land grants in Kent
County, Ontario.
The original records from which this database has been prepared are
housed in a number of archives and libraries across Canada. The source
information for each record will guide you to the relevant collection.

The site says: Becoming the sixteenth state in 1796, Tennessee was

database is a collection of marriage records from the state between
1851 and 1900. This update adds marriages from Warren County between
1852 and 1900. Researchers will find the names of both bride and groom
along with the marriage date. The county where the ceremony was
performed is also provided. Containing over 64,000 records and the
names of about 132,000 men and women, this collection can be a
tremendous aid to those seeking ancestors from the area.
Extended Description: Warren County marriage records were taken from

Zabette,
You are on the right track, Lt. James Calhoun was married to Custer's
sister. I have checked some very good sites on the internet, some very
interesting reading on history.
Thank you for responding to my e-mail, it is nice to be able to work with
others having an interest in Calhoun.

Verna,
I stand corrected. I just read some information on line and Col. George A.
Custer was m. to a Elizabeth Bacon. I may be wrong, but I remember reading
that Lt. James Calhoun was Custers brother in law and he was killed at the
Battle along with Custer. Several ways to look at this, perhaps Calhoun was
m. to the sister of Custer. There are web sites on Custer and perhaps by
going in that direction you can find something out on James Calhoun.

Verna,
Have been following these questions on Lt. James Calhoun with great
interest.
He was related by marriage to Lt. Col. George A. Custer, an American army
officer, who won fame as an Indian fighter in the West. and was killed by
Indians in the "Battle of the Little Big Horn". If I remember right, James
Calhoun's sister was m. to Lt. Col. Custer. There is some connection family
wise. I have seen books written about Custer that were more of a personal
nature at the Barnes & Noble Books Stores. Checking out your public library
might be of help.

I have just started my search on Lt. James Calhoun and thought there might
be someone on the list that was researching the same family and we could
share information.
I have checked out what I can at the LDS Family History Center and have
gotten a form to fill out for his military records. I'm thinking this will
be my best bet.
Thanks Valorie for your resonse.

He appears in the 1850 census of Ward 6, Cincinnati OH, as a 5-year
old,
with his father James, 40, a merchant, born in MA, his mother
Charlotte,
27, and brothers Frederick, 3, and John L., 1, all born in OH.
