As I mentioned in my post, I have specific documents that are part of my Great Great
Grandfather's Civil War Records which have S. S. Calhoon's signature/address on
them. Solomon Saladin Calhoon was Michael W. Shanahan's Regimental Captain. Two of
the documents are simply requisition forms which Solomon and Michael signed and the other
was a letter formally recognizing Michael's promotion to 2nd Lt.
They can be viewed at:

However, if you are interested in personal letters, you may enjoy reading a letter written
by Michael W. Shanahan's best friend and 1st Lieutenant, Robert E. McCarthy. Robert
wrote the letter after Michael's death and it details some of his war experiences.

There is also another very personal letter written by Michael himself, in 1868 (to his
sister Margaret "Maggie" Shanahan) in which he speaks briefly of himself as a
soldier and tells the very moving story of how and when he converted his faith from being
Catholic (Michael was an Irish Immigrant who fought the entire duration of the Civil War
for his adopted country) to being Baptist. You can view this letter at:

Enjoy!
