CALHOON J. Thomas Calhoon, age 85, of Hilliard, Ohio passed away unexpectedly, November 7,
2010, at Riverside Hospital, Columbus, Ohio with his family present.
Tom was born September 11, 1925, in Wellsville, Ohio (Columbiana County) to the late John
F. and Mabel F. Calhoon, and raised in East Liverpool, Ohio and Grandview, Ohio.
Calhoon served with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, 1943-1947 in the Pacific
Theatre-Marshall Islands, Okinawa. He was critically wounded on Okinawa, June 10, 1945,
and spent the next 27 months in hospitals recovering where he met Sarah Mae Shoemaker, a
hospital volunteer in Philadelphia. They were married August 29, 1947.
Preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Sarah Mae, sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and
George Durbin, niece Carla Durbin, brother-in-law John Brett, and in-laws Samuel and Mae
Shoemaker.
Survived by four sons, Thomas F. (Donnette), Hilliard,Ohio, Samuel S. (Bonnie), Upper
Arlington, Ohio, Donald F. (Joanne), Hilton Head Island, SC, and Robert P., Hilliard,
Ohio; daughter, Sarah Susan Calhoon Turner (Tom), Somerset, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Ben
(Natassia), Josh (Julie), Brian, Christie, Katie (Tommy) Hurst, Cara and Brittany Calhoon;
great grandchildren, Preston, Jocelyn and Samuel; brother, Harold F. Calhoon, Canton,
Ohio, nephews, John, Dan and Dave Calhoon; sister-in-law, Mary Brett; nieces, Sarah Mae
Perry, Kathy Bento, Maryjon Brett of Ipswich, MA; numerous cousins.
He was dedicated to numerous activities including: Charter member St. Mark's
Episcopal Church; Past President and 57 year member, Tri-Village Lions Club; Life member
Grandview High School Alumni Association; Director Franklin County Agricultural Society;
Regional President, Regional Governor, and National Board of Directors Weimaraner Club of
America; Member American Kennel Club; Director Pilot Dogs, Inc.; 4-H Club Advisor,
Hilliard Music Boosters; Life Member Northwest Franklin County Historical Society, and
Alpha Delta Sigma advertising fraternity.
His education included: Grandview Heights High School Class of 1943; Texas A&M;
Vallejo Junior College, CA; Franklin School, PA; The Ohio State University, School of
Journalism and Public Relations.
Calhoon spent his career in the advertising and public relations profession including
Wheeler, Kight & Gainey, Inc.; Humphreys Advertising; Wanner P. Simpson Co.; Janitrol
Heating and Air Conditioning, Midland-Ross Corp; Bayer Printing; Adkinson-Brisco
Advertising; and owner of Design Graphics Inc. and the Grandview QuickPrint Centre.
Calhoon received recognition for both his military and civic duties. He was awarded two
Purple Hearts for military service and sacrifice; recipient of the Tri-Village Lions
Club-Lifetime Achievement Award, Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lions International,
and The Bryan Fellowship Award from Ohio Lions, their highest awards, respectively.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the SCHOEDINGER
NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday,
November 11, 2010 at St Mark's Episcopal Church, 2151 Dorset Rd., Columbus, OH.
Interment, Wesley Chapel Cemetery, 3275 Dublin Rd.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the J. Thomas Calhoon Memorial Funds
at either the Ohio 4-H Foundation at The Ohio State University Development Fund, 2201 Fred
Taylor Dr. Columbus, Ohio 43210 or Pilot Dogs, Inc., 625 Town St., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
