Calhoon list members,
You probably have noticed that Rootsweb lists have been slow or non-existant. For more
information, see the yellow box on
http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com
I've been meaning to write to y'all, because my life has taken a different turn in
the last year. The spring of 2002, my cousin Carol and her son Colin came to live with us.
She was ill, and died that next October, leaving us to raise her son Colin. So this
mama-with-an-empty-nest became the mama-of-a-teenager. Colin is 16 now, and doing well,
but it's been pretty difficult. I'm sure you have noticed that I haven't been
posting to the list as much.
Also, I'm really far behind on fixing up the Message Board posts before sending them
along to the list. I have always done this in the past, because people tend to click reply
in their email programs sort of automatically, and that tactic doesn't work very well
for replying to list posts! I'm so behind, however, that I'm going to enable
automatic gatewaying. You will see the MB posts at the same time I do, and I won't be
able to add any notice that you should Click the Link and reply on the board -- but please
remember to do so. And I won't have a chance to edit the Subject line and make sure it
pertains to the post, instead of a post long ago in the thread, and the Surname line to
make sure that it indexes surnames mentioned in the post, instead of a long list of all
the surnames the poster is researching!
In short, I don't have as much time at my disposal any more for editing the MB posts
before you get them, so you will have to keep your wits about you, and remember to reply
to MB posts ON THE BOARD -- or at least CC the poster when you reply to the list. I'll
try to keep up with editing the Subject and Surname indexing as I see the posts. The
Cahoon Message Board is at:

I hope that allowing automatic gatewaying will give the list more traffic.
I created a webpage of research helps awhile back, at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/Calhoon-L.htm . Please bookmark that
page, and notify me of any bad links, or anything I need to add. Remember that a great way
to get data up is to transcribe Bible records, Wills, Pensions, Deeds, Census data and so
forth, put the text in a Message Board post, and attach the image. Be sure to put all the
surnames mentioned in the document in the Surname indexing line -- not a list of the
surnames you are researching!
All the best,
Valorie
