Colomial Wiccomico & St. Stephen's Parishes
In colonial Virginia, local government was managed by Church of England
parishes, with the vestrymen responsible for many public services such as ferries
and care for the poor. In 1653, only 11 years after the first recorded
settlement in Northumberland County (and 46 years after the first English
settlement in North America), the first parish divisions of the county were created.
Parish boundaries changed from time to time, but at the close of the colonial
era, Northumberland County was divided into the parishes of St. Stephen's
and Wiccomico Church. Records indicate that there were two colonial-era
buildings in St. Stephen's, serving the upper and lower parts of the parish (roughly
analogous to St. Stephen's and St. Mary's today). These buildings
disappeared as did many other buildings of the established church in the
post-Revolutionary era.
