I have the 1850 Blackford Co IN census before me as I write. I just
downloaded it this morning . . .
Cales, John 34
Cales, Catherine 34
Cales, Parkerson 16 [that would be Parkison, probably named for Keziah's
brother, "Parkey".
Cales, Jackson 23 (my gg]
Cales, Lancing 8
Cales, Isabel 5
Cales, Sarah 5 [the twins, whom AJ remembered baby-sitting]
Cales, Clouser 3 [this would be Nelson Clausen?]
Cales, Calaway 12/9 [presume this means nine months. James Calaway,
C.C.? The Fiddler? I have a picture of him,
anyway.
I've been looking thru my old records, most of which I didn't have a clue
about when I got them . . .re: "Kesiah". I made the statement on line
yesterday that "Kesiah" is a nickname for "Elizabeth". I've seen
is so used
in other cases. In this one, it is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. I have a
copy of a page out of the Giles Co WV history book listing the Meadows
children as "Philip; John; Parkey C; James J. 'Keziah, married John Kales';
Catherine, 'Elizabeth married James Mullens'; Nancy; Sarah; Jessie; Robert;
Peter; Stafford . . ." Now comes the Summers County WV book, p 185 ". .
.Mrs. Elizabeth Cales, one of the aboriginal settlers, died, over 100 years
old". This is obviously not Mrs. James Mullens . . .Kesiah is reputed to
have been more than 100 when she died. The date I see most often is 1918.
CAVEAT: These county "history books" are compilations of family narratives
written by family members, sometimes without documentation, and often by
very old people. There is room for error. When I was a newspaper publisher,
we set up a program to publish one of these county books [in MT] but I
backed off because I saw too much opportunity for error . . .
NOW, to add to the confusion, the 1870 Iroquois Co IL [Beaver Twp] census
shows:
John Cales 52
Elizabeth 32
Lucien 12
Almadocia 6
Jarrett 3
Lancing 26
Sarah 24
Isabel is missing, perhaps married by that time. Jackson shows separately in
the same census, with his own family. I won't list Parkison's family, since
it is not part of the present discussion . . .There is a "C Cales, 19, and
Martha, 17 with a John R, aged 2" also listed separately. This may be
Calaway.
The above, with the exception of the Blackford Co IN census which I got from
the internet, came from Gary Lee Cale of Spencer WV in a 1988 letter. I
forgot I had it until I started digging this morning.
There is a lot more Meadows info in Gary's letter. If anyone wants it, send
me your snail mail address and I'll mail a copy. You can rely on Gary's
information, but I haven't heard from him in some time. If anyone on line,
especially in WV, knows his whereabouts, I would like to get in touch with
him.

Hi Ann,
In one of your earlier msgs, you said:
"The stepmother, named Catherine, age 34, in the 1850 census, Blackford Co.
IN, apparently bore 5 children to John, including twins."
According to my info, Catherine Meadows, sister to Kesiah, was born about
1825. Maybe George can tell us what date he has. If this is accurate,
either she wasn't the second wife, or the census had her age wrong. She
would have been only about 15 when she took off with John Cales.
