Wear your tartan on April 6 . . .
You just picked up on the same supposition everybody else did . . .I've seen
the line "probably deceased" re: John in several places in print. The
contemporary accounts either didn't know or didn't want to tell what they knew
. . .
Kesiah had to be his first wife. She was 18 according to the dates, 1815, 1833
. . .I saw one published account that said she was 13. John was 16, two years
younger than she . . .[1817] They had two sons, Andrew Jackson Cales [my gg]
and Parkison. All the rest of John's children were from other wives. Keziah
had another son, Archibald Cales, and then she reverted to using the "Meadows"
surname. . . I suspect Catherine died, altho [here's the detective story] I
heard she left and went back to Virginia. Don't remember where I heard/saw
that.
There was also a terrible recession in the 1830s. The boys were "remanded to
the keepers of the poor", hence AJ's recollection of 'wearing gunny sacks
on
his feet instead of shoes'. They were actually in the care of their
grandfather, James Cales, but that didn't mean they had any money . . .I think
John bailed out because of the recession [why on earth they name one kid
Andrew Jackson under those circumstances is beyond me] but nobody seems to
know why he left Keziah and ran off with her sister . . . I also think [no
proof] he had kin in Licking Twp IN. There was another set of Köehl, Kell,
Kahl who arrived in the 1730s and got settled first. I keep finding CALEs I
can't account for in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It's pretty obvious David
was indentured, because he stayed in NJ just a little more than ten years and
then took off for Virginia . . . could have been to a relative.

Have you seen Keziah's notice in the Summers Co WV history book? If I ever get
back there again I'm going to get a copy of that. I saw it in the Greenbrier
County Library, but I was there the day before Thanksgiving, the place was
closed, they let me in but I couldn't copy anything or take the book out.
Others have tried to get the book on inter-library loan with no luck.
