Thank you for that! I KNEW I had seen that line in print about "full blooded
Indian who was the mother of Archibald Cales", but I couldn't find it in my
files. It must have been when I was in WV in '95 and they wouldn't let me
copy anything in the Lewisburg library . . .
I think you are probably right about "aboriginal". It's an odd use of the
word, but must have meant "early settler". Anyway, it got referenced on an
IGI done my one of my cousins as "full-blooded Indian".
Like Chicken Little, we always have to check our sources, eh?
Archibald, of course, was a brother to John . . .and until this recent
discussion line I had never before seen Sarah Dick Cales referred to as
"Elizabeth". Hence my confusion.
I have both Summers County History books.
In the new History (page 157) there is an article by Willie Joe Cales about
Brady Peter and Virginia Chattin Cales family. The article talks about
"Elizabeth Cales" a full blooded Indian who was the mother of Archibald Cales
( 1821-1897) who was Dutch, Welch and Indian and married Nancy Wyant.
Since the parents of Archibald were James Cales and Sarah Dick and nothing
that I had seen indicated that Sarah was a full blooded Indian, I discounted
a lot of the information.
In Miller's History (page 185): "In June of this year Mrs. Elizabeth Cales,
one of the aboriginal settlers, died, over 100 years old. She died at the
residence of Eber Willey, in Greenbrier District." The year mentioned before
and after that piece was 1881.
I think that the article in the new history misunderstood Judge Millers use
of of the term 'aboriginal', thinking it meant "Indian" when I think he
meant
"the people living in a country at the earliest period." {meaning from the
New American College Dictionary}
If I can be of any more help, please let me know. Judge Miller's book is not
indexed, which makes looking for things very interesting.
