Hi Listers,
My emigrant ancestor was Philipp Jacob KÖHL, born 17 June 1803 in
Sankt Johann am Saar, Saarbrüken, Rheinland, Prussia (Now Saarland,
Germany). The family was Lutheran. They did not always use the
spiritual name, Johann/Hans (boys) or Anna/Maria (girls) for the
first name as many Germans did. Male names that they did use were:
Philipp, Ludwig (Louis), Wilhelm (William), Freiderich, Heinrich,
Andreas, Samuel, Conrad, Jacob, Georg, Christian. Girls were
Catharina, Margaretha, Susanna,Louisa,Magdalena.
Philipp's mother was Anna Margaretha KARCHER(in). The KARCHER and
KÖHL families were very intermarried. I have traced Anna Margaretha's
line back to 1550 in Malstatt, near St. Johann.
I don't know where or when Philipp arrived in the US. The first
documented info about him is in Jan. 1836 when he purchased land in
Ripley Co. IN. On 15 Dec. 1836, in adjoining Dearborn Co. IN, he
married Elizabeth B.? Howery, b. 15 December 1819 in IN?. By Aug.
1847 they were in Morgan Co. IN where they remained until 1856 when
they moved to Carver Co., MN. Philipp died on their homestead near
Waconia, MN 14 September 1870.
Philipp and Elizabeth had 12 children:
Sarah Ann Cale (1838-1880) m. Frank Wabbe
Philip Henry Cale (1842-1859)
Louis James Cale (1845-) m. Louisa Barrick
George William Cale (1847-1928) m. Mary Maxwell
John Jacob Cale (1848-1918) m. Effie Bries
Mary Elisabeth Cale (1849-1850)
Samuel Frederick Cale (1851-1927)
Theresa Ellen Cale (1852-1931) m. Fred Heffner
Rosena Sohpia Cale (1854-1930) m. 1. S. Ferrell, 2. Wm. Ayers
Benjamin Franklin Cale (1856-1936) m. Louella Hamlin
Twins:
Carolina Lucinda Cale (1856-1925) m. John Sampson
Alphred Henry Cale (1861-1862)
Philipp was a farmer and reportedly was a miller in "the
old country". Both the KÖHL and KARCHER men were butchers and/or
innkeepers in St. Johann.
I know nothing of Philipp's wife, Elizabeth HOWERY prior to their
marriage. Her death certificate says she was born in IN. After
Philipp's death, she married Johann Jacob BAUMEZ.
I have been trying to connect Philipp with David Kail who emigrated
in 1742. Philipp
emigrated several decades later, but I first find him near Preble Co.
OH where many of David's descendants were at the time. Philipp also
was spelling his name CALE by 1836.
I have been researching in the Palatinate area of Germany, the
various spellings of Keil/Kell/Köhl/Koehl/Kahl/Coehl/Kayl/etc.
I'm also studying the Sankt Johann parish
records and am trying to figure out what the relationships were. It
is difficult as they used the same names over and over within the
family and if no birth dates are with the records, it is hard to know
for sure which person is in the record.
Who else has info about Germanic origins of their immigrant ancestor?
