My family line for the Cales is David Cale (DPOB: 1716; Palatinate,
Germany; DPOD: 25 April 1786; Augusta County, Virginia) who married
Alberdina Barthenia Cale; then their son, John Cales (1751; Nottingham
Township, Burlington County, New Jersey; DPOD: 25 June 1834; Preble
County, Ohio) who married Isabella T. Burnside; then their daughter Mary
"Polly" Cales (DPOB: 1790; Greenbrier County, Virginia; DPOD: 1860;
Monroe County, Virginia). Mary "Polly" Cales had several children when
unmarried. She then married Riley Adkins and had several more,
including a
Pleasant Adkins who raised a James Floyd Adkins (DPOB: April 1856;
Greenbrier, Virginia; DPOD: After 1900; Summers County, West Virginia.
James Floyd Adkins is my great grandfather. It was known within my family
that we were Richmonds and that Adkins was not our real name, but Cales was.
It was known that either James Floyd Adkins or Pleasant Adkins was really
named James Floyd Cales or Pleasant Cales, who was taken in by an Adkins
family after left orphaned and assumed the Adkins name although it was
really Cales.
I am trying to find out where that happened within this line, and I wonder
if we came from Mary "Polly" Cales' children by an unknown father, who
might
have been a Richmond.

Subject: [CALES-L] ROLL CALL
It's been a quiet week in Lake . . .ooops wrong channel. The list
HAS
been quiet lately.
Apparently the new threaded archiver is working, but CALES-L has no
posts on file. That is because there have been none since the new
software was activated.SO, for that and many other good reasons, let's
have a ROLL CALL.
Please list your CALE or related line giving known facts including
surname, first name, relationship if known, date and location. Please
name wives. This is a great help when all the men are named John or
William or whatever. Also, the repetition of a given name sometimes
identifies a family thread.
In today's society given names reflect current movie, TV or media stars.
There was a period when a lot of girls were Sharon. Then came Debbie,
followed by Julie, and Lisa. Boys were Sean or Mark. Now I suppose we'll
have thousands of little Monicas . . .200 years ago children were name
for grandpa and grandma. It does have significance.
Cousin Judie out in Idaho has been doing a lot of research on the
Palatinate and the possible connection between the names CALE, CALES,
KAIL, KOEHL, KOHL, KEIL, KEEL and other variations. Any input on this
subject is welcomed. I think there is a possible connection with many
Germania families we may have overlooked or ignored in the past because
of differing spellings.
I hope it isn't as cold and rainy where you are as it is in Oregon this
morning.
Warm and sunny best wishes.
Aye
