FHL 929.273 B982w ("Our Butterfield Family", by Maureen Butterfield
Wichelas,
1991)
"John George or Hans Jerg Kail/Kehl was born in Waldangelloch, Germany on
April 16, 1726. Waldangelloch is a village a few miles from Sinsheim and
about 16 miles southeast of Heidelberg. It is an area much like
southeastern
Pennsylvania with rolling hills, gentle streams and lush fields. John
George
was the son of Georg Dietrich and Ursula Maria (Buckhenmeyer) Coehl/Kehl.
The
family is listed on the passenger list of the ship, Britannia, which arrived
in Philadelphia from Rotterdam on September 21, 1731. Hans Jerg was 7 years
old when he came to America with his family. They settled in Tulpehocken
Township near Reading, in Berks County, Pa. with several other German
families from Waldangelloch. Hans Jerg and Anna Elisabeth Wagner were
married
on December 13, 1748, at Christ Lutheran Church, Tulpehocken Twp., Berks,
Pa.
The John George Kail family moved from Pennsylvania to Hampshire County,
Virginia between (1760 and 1779?). There, George Kail bought 400 acres of
land on the Great Capecapon River. This area, now in West Virginia, is
known
as the Capon Valley and is near Bubbling Springs, a mineral spring that
sends
up innumerable bubbles which break at the surface constantly.
George (John George) Kail died on July 26, 1797 at the age of 71. He was
buried in the Kail Cemetery, a family cemetery, which is now a cow pasture.
In his Will made on June 15, 1797, proved Sept. 10, 1797 (will and codicil)
he
left his land to his three sons, Peter, John and George to be divided
equally.
He had two daughters, unnamed, one dead and one alive. Executors: George
Spade and Phillip Cline, "trusty friends". Security, John Flye, Sr., and
John
Hammer. Witnesses: William Carlyle, John Chenoweth and Abraham Chenoweth.
Peter and John sold their share of the property to their brother, George in
1803. They then moved to Ohio with their families."

1782 Hampshire County, Virginia Census--George Kail:6 free white, John Kail
(Kale) -3 free whites. 1784 Hampshire County, Virginia Census: George Kail-
7
free whites; 1 dwelling; 3 other buildings. John Kail (Kale)- 4 free whites;
1
dwelling.
"Historical Records of Old Frederick and Hampshire Counties, Virginia"
(Revised) by Wilmer L. Kerns, Ph. D. Kale (Cale), John was born on April
19,
1726, and died on July 26, 1797, near Capon Bridge. His wife, Elizabeth
Pugh,
was born on December 13, 1730 and died on September 14,1796. Kale came to
Hampshire County circa 1774 and settled on Fairfax grants originally issued
to
John Parks I, and Richard Arnold. No indenture has yet been located which
proves that John Kale purchased land in Hampshire County. An 18th century
mill mentioned in a courthouse land record (1800), stood on Kale's land.
Much
speculation has been made about the origin and roots of John and Elizabeth
Kale..(Source: Records submitted by descendants; cemetery inscriptions; land
records).
