Hi Vince:
Your post rings bells, but I can find no Brant in my available records. I've
probably seen it as an ancillary line in some hard copy I have filed away. I
did check on Jacob and Griselda. I have their names but no further. Jacob was
a son of our original David Kail of Augusta Co VA. I also find Griselda,
Grizzell, in Greenbrier Co in the early 1800s. I expect your information there
is correct. I also have at least two Mary Catherines, but not married to a
Brant. The connection is not, however, surprising, as the Kails were Palatines
and the woods were full of German immigrants.
I'm going to post this whole exchange to my CALES-L list and see if anyone
else can add to it.
Aye
Paul Cales

Hello, Paul Cales:
I picked up your name through some emails received through my research on
a John Brant of Greenbrier Co. (now WVA).
I am descended from John Brant and Mary Catherine Cales. They were married in
Rockingham Co. Va. on Nov. 13, 1798. Mary Catherine was daughter of Jacob
Cales and Grizzel Handley. After marriage, John and Catherine moved to
Greenbrier Co. Mary's mother Grizzel went with them because she already
had relatives there.
Do you have any clues about the origins of John Brant. He would have been
born about 1775 and died about 1824. He was said to have been German. I
have searched for years and have not been able to find much about his origins.
Do you know if he was in Burlington Co. NJ with the Cailes? Another German
who was surety at the marriage of John and Catherine was Jacob Kessler.
Any help you can give would be helpful. Also, I took a quick trip (I'm at
work) to the Broyles web site. I'm also related through them by way of
the Fleshman family. Robert moved to Greenbrier.
Anyway, can you help me establish the origins of John Brant?
Thanks,
Vince Brant
