Because my William Allen Cale was born in December 1800 and his brother Preston B. Cale
was born in 1801-2 (in Rockbridge Co., VA), I've spent some time looking for any
Cail/Cale/Cales/etc families in the 1810 and 1820 census in Rockbridge (or neighboring
counties) with sons of the appropriate age.
One of the "candidate" families is that ascribes to one "Porthing"
Cale in 1820. There is one male b. bet. 1802-4 and three b. bet. 1794-1801 (the way I read
the confusing age captions). The oldest of the two or three females is either 26-44 years
old or 45 and older. The confusion is that one of the marks is either faint or was poorly
erased. At any rate, it appears that this is a family headed by a woman. I believe the
name was really given as Partheny and that this was Parthenia Cale.
David Cail, son of the emigrant, is often given with a wife named Parthenia, but her will
dated 1801 suggests that this Parthenia of 1820 was of the next generation.
Do any of you have a Parthenia as a daughter or daughter-in-law to David Cail of
Rickbridge (son of the emigrant)? It would appear that this Parthenia was either a Cale
widow or (seemingly less likely) an unmarried mother of five or six children.
Just thought I toss this out for you consideration
