My immigrant ancestor was Philip Jacob Köhl, born 17 June 1803 in Sankt Johann
am Saar, Prussia (now part of Saarbrüken, Saarland, Germany). He came to the US
prior to 1836, settling in Ripley Co. IN where he married Elizabeth Howery.
They had 12 children, most of them born in Morgan Co, IN. They moved to Carver
Co. MN in 1856 where Philip died in 1870.
I am trying to connect my ancestor with the descendants of David Kail who came
over on the Loyal Judith in 1742. My Philip was living in the same counties at
the same time where David's family lived, and changed the spelling on his name
to CALE. However, he did use these additional spellings over time: COLE, CELE,
KOEHL and KEHLE.
I have collected quite a bit of info on all the variants of this name that I
have found in German records, as well as in the US. I'd be happy to share any
of this.
Anyone else out there who has a CALE or variant who originated in the
Palatinate?
