Dear Joann and others on the MYRICK, CAGLE, CALE, MILLS, Simpson Co., MS and
Polk Co lists,
Hi, again, still waiting to talk to Daddy but Mama called just now about the
little brochure/book that she found. It does not mention Pink MYRICK as she
thought but does have some info that may help us in searching for more
connecting features for these various MYRICK's. This family below may or may
not connect to our MYRICK family group but they certainly sound as if they do
and I suspect that they do.
Okay....the brochure has the title "THE LOOKING GLASS: Reflecting Life In
the Ouachitas." It includes some material from a book or brochure or
articles by Jim MYRICK from Mina, Arkansas which is titled "LIFE BEHIND THE
CHASE," published in December 1979 and is in the Polk County, Arkansas
library.
Jim MYRICK was a hunting dog owner and hunter and mentions in this brochure
that his MYRICK family moved to Mina, Arkansas in 1870 and his grandfather
was the one named Spencer MYRICK, (the same name as my uncle, W. Spencer
MYRICK, who became a Senator after being a Representative in Louisiana and
the Insurance Commissioner for LA,) and the writer Jim MYRICK's grandfather,
Spencer MYRICK, went to Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans, LA,
and became a doctor, Dr. Spencer MYRICK.
Jim MYRICK mentions that his grandfather, Dr. Spencer MYRICK traveled in 1870
with his parents and brothers and their families from Kentucky to Mina,
Arkansas. He also mentions that his MYRICK family were of Irish and Cherokee
descent. (Most likely though that MYRICK lineage goes back to Welsh with the
Irish coming in from one of the ancestral grandmother's lineage from all I
can tell so far....but not necessarily.) My mother couldn't find it just now
but somewhere in this article I am sure it mentions that Jim MYRICK's father
or, perhaps, his grandfather, Spencer MYRICK's father may have been named
James MYRICK.
Jim MYRICK mentions that his grandfather Dr. Spencer MYRICK is descended,
also, from the CAGLE family.
Jim MYRICK also mentions in the article that is grandmother, and here I
believe that he is referring to the grandmother who was the wife of his
MYRICK grandfather, was a full blood Cherokee woman who descends from the
MILLS family that came from Alabama in 1845. He goes on to say that his
great grandfather MILLS built a log cabin in Jansen Park in Mina, Arkansas
and that great grandparents named CAGLE married in that cabin. (This would
seem to imply a probable family connection between the MILLS and CAGLES as
well as the CAGLES and the MYRICKS. If Spencer MYRICK's great grandmother
was a CAGLE who married MYRICK and then the MYRICK married the MILLS or if
the MILLS was the mother of Spencer MYRICK's grandmother??? Confusing myself
here.....anyway......the article says that the CAGLE's were on the MYRICK
side and Dr. Spencer MYRICK married the Cherokee MILLS descendant woman but
don't have a name for her.
It also mentions that Dr. Spencer MYRICK was descended from an Elijah CALE
who journeyed with his family in 1830 from Georgia to Mina, Arkansas. Is
this name CALE correct.....or should that, also, be CAGLE?
And, Jim MYRICK, also mentions that in this article which is republished in
1979, don't know when his original book was written or published......but if
my memory is working at all, it seems like I remember that it was originally
published in either the 30's or the 40's......don't hold me to that.......but
anyway....when writing this article he says that his grandmother was 90 years
old, which would be in keeping with the timeframe of his grandfather, Spencer
MYRICK, arriving in Mina, Arkansas with his family in 1870.
I have come across a CAGLE and MYRICK family before with the name Priscilla
CAGLE in there, I believe. I will look those up again. And if any of this
rings any bells with anyone.....please contact me.
As I mentioned earlier, my 3rd great grandfather was William MYRICK, born:
sometime prior to 1790 and his family is said to have been from Georgia and
the possible grandmother for his wife, Elizabeth PIERCE, born: 1790 in South
Carolina was in Georgia in the late 1830's in a census. Don't know where
else my William MYRICK's family was for sure prior to Georgia or after before
he and his wife left there sometime after the birth of their first son who
was either Aquilla MYRICK or James MYRICK and probably born in or abt.
1814......and then in abt. 1820 they were migrating to Mississippi when they
were in Alabama for the births of their 2 middle sons, Henry or William?
Henry MYRICK, and his brother, Jeremiah MYRICK, and then in Jasper Co., MS in
1827 when my 2nd great grandfather, their son, was born. He married Phoebe
Catherine HERRINGTON.
And the above mentioned Elizabeth PIERCE is thought POSSIBLY to be the
daughter of Hugh PIERCE, (Rev. War,) born: abt 1749, (parents: ??,) (may
have had a twin brother named Daniel PIERCE, not sure,) and his wife,
Sofia/Sophia HUNTER, daughter of Cherokee parents, (mother: Beaver
TOATER/TOTER, aka "Toyaleese"/"To-wah-yeh-leesa," father: Bold
HUNTER,) and
Beaver TOATER is shown as the head of the household in an 1838 census in
Georgia. This PIERCE family with their son, George PIERCE, who married
Elizabeth McCRACKEN, are found in the same areas during the same timeframe as
my Elizabeth PIERCE.
Is it possible that the Dr. Spencer MYRICK who arrived with his parents in
Mina, Arkansas in 1870 was a grandson or great grandson of the above
mentioned Elizabeth PIERCE and William MYRICK.
If Dr. Spencer MYRICK's father's name was James MYRICK there are grandsons of
the above mentioned Elizabeth PIERCE and William MYRICK that would be
possible candidates for the father of Dr. Spencer MYRICK. They are as
follows:
James C. MYRICK, born: 1845/1847, son of Aquilla?/James? MYRICK and his wife
who was ?/Quilla? BENNETT and Aquilla?/James? MYRICK was the son of Elizabeth
PIERCE and William MYRICK.
James MYRICK, born: 1847, son of Jeremiah MYRICK, born: abt. 1820 in
Alabama, son of Elizabeth PIERCE and William MYRICK.
Other possibilities not named James that were grandsons of Elizabeth PIERCE
and William MYRICK were:
Daniel Lawrence MYRICK, born: 1849, son of Aquilla?/James? MYRICK and wife,
?/Quilla? BENNETT, and Aquilla?/James? MYRICK was the son of Elizabeth PIERCE
and William MYRICK.
John MYRICK, born: 1841, son of Henry/William? Henry MYRICK, son of
Elizabeth PIERCE and William MYRICK.
I am not sure where these above listed grandsons of Elizabeth PIERCE and
William MYRICK lived as adults
Keep in mind that all of this from the brochure/book was copied by me in my
phone conversation with my mother just now......so, hopefully, she didn't
read incorrectly and I didn't write incorrectly any of this information.....
Looking forward to hearing from anyone with any of the missing pieces. Also,
I really would like to communicate with any of the CAGLE, CALE, MILLS, MYRICK
descendants that might have more information on this family group.
Sincerely,
Bellinda Myrick - Barnett
