Susan,
ka WELL 'is' the correct pronunciation of the name <GRIN> particularly if
you are descendant of the first CALDWELLs to arrive in KY, the Danville
area, and other areas of long term kaWELL residence.
Folks who are not familiar with that or who wish to show a lack of
interest in their connection to those using traditional pronunciation make
efforts to change it.

Can I interfere with your discussion? I have info (descendancy) on
John
Caldwell of Montgomery Co., TN who died 1821. This county is directly
across the State line from Christian Co., KY. John had following sons
and daughter (all with common Caldwell names): Thomas, John, Robert,
Samuel, Sarah, Elizabeth "Betsy", Jane, James (my line). It was common
practice of these Caldwells to pronounce the name as if it were spelled
Cawell with accent on the "well". Does this have any meaning to you
folks? Sincerely, Susan G. Daniel, Murfreesboro, TN
