Thank-you so much Jim for re-posting the 1991 information; I am hoping others
are still interested in this same family.
Here is the little I have learned as very much, a newby
and amateur to this genealogy obsession.
This is what I believe in 1998 to be true of my ancestry.
It continually changes and grows.
I'd love to hear from others with these lines.
Nathan Caldwell estimated to have been born 1739
source 1: Nathan Caldwell's headstone (at Beersheba) says:
"In memory of Nathan Caldwell died March 15, 1800 age 61"
from letter received 29 May 1998 *
spouse: Elinor McPhilemy (spelling ?) died 26 July 1835
older sister of Agnes McPhilemy [1752-14 Feb 1833 York Co, SC] and
dtr. of James McPhilemy [abt 1726-abt 1827]
(this family may be listed in the McElwee information mentioned)
source 2: letter dated 11 April 1998 giving sources as:
Joe Hart Genealogical Collection, Historical Ctr. of York County
Caldwell Family of York County, SC; Beersheba Presbyterian Churchyard,
York County, SC, *
(I have no reason to believe or not to believe that Eleanor / Elinor was
Nathans only wife, or he her only husband, particularly, as the children of
whom I have information were born rather late in her life. It is probable
that the much older brother(s) mentioned by John Whalen do exist. It is still
possible that Robert Caldwell's mother was a Wallace. However, Nathan's last
wife was Eleanor.)
Two of the children of Nathan (and possibly Elinor) were Robert & Joseph
Caldwell:
(1) Robert Caldwell
born 1787 County Tyrone, Ireland
died (?) likely before 1870
spouse: Elizabeth Love [1789-aft. 1870]
[daughter of John and Margaret Love
made their living from a blacksmith shop,
Bullock's Creek, York Co., SC]
source: Harris family information
1850 SC York Co., York (city) p. 288
census taken: 11/19/1850
household 222:
Caldwell, John 25 M SC (York District)
" , Margaret 25 M SC (York District)
-----
household 223:
Caldwell, Robert 63 M Ireland Farmer
" , Elizabeth 62 F SC (York)
" , Margaret 22 F SC
" , Frances 22 F SC
" , Robert 3 M SC [aka later McArthur ?]
" , Mary E. 2 F SC [aka later Maxwell ? ]
I have been twice told that "someone said" ** etc. that both Margaret and
Frances were mothers of these children and later married the fathers and
moved to Georgia; unclear as to the order of the marriage and move. I do not
know if orphans court records are available for York County, SC and feel that
this requires further research to be certain. If true, I am delighted, for
it confirms Colwell Maxwell as my ancestor.
It was suggested that the reputations of the Caldwell girls were the reason
for the move. If someone has this as a family legend, I would be interested
in this.
Known children of Robert Caldwell and Elizabeth Love are John Caldwell,
Margaret Caldwell (Mrs Neely McArthur) and Frances Caldwell (Mrs Colwell
Maxwell).
also another rumored brother.
i. John CALDWELL b. 1825 in York Co., SC married about 1848 Margaret
Neeland(s) born 1826, daughter of Robert, born 1788 in England & Margaret
Neelands born 1795 Chester District, SC.
notes from the Harris family information: John was around 27 years old when
the family came to North Georgia and he and his wife came with them. He
served in Company I, First Regiment, Georgia State Troops, during the Civil
War where the privation and exposure so weakened him that he never recovered,
but died in April of 1867, leaving Margaret with nine childen. [from the
Harris book] documentation to my knowledge has not been located.

** The "someone"'s sources now appear to be my Uncle John Whalen who was a
highly respected attorney in Whittier, California; a fascinating and careful
man of great integrity.
I would dearly love to hear from anyone from this line;
Please forgive me if I have caused any offense to anyone.
