Bill and Clarke...and other SC -- CALDWELL folks...Everyone read for clues to
MS and AL...also
Oh, what a tangled web we weave!!! :~) Thanks so much for getting some
dialogue going on this subject maybe we can all help each other out.
Where do I begin...Most of my information comes from the Revised Edition/1998
- 1850 Census w/Data on many families, by the Newberry Co, Historical Society.
In addition to the source just mentioned, I have letters dated from 1830 to
1852. The letters are from Sarah (____) MONTGOMERY in Newberry Co, SC to my
4G-Grandmother in Illinois! My 4G-Grandmother is Elizabeth (CALDWELL)
MONTGOMERY. Sarah (____) MONTGOMERY is the wife of Samual MONTGOMERY, Sr.,
Samual is the brother of Andrew MONTGOMERY, who married Elizabeth (CALDWELL)
MONTGOMERY. Also, Andrew & Samual's sister, Jane/Ginette MONTGOMERY married
Joseph CALDWELL. Whew...I think I've got that straight now...One more after
thought. I do not have the maiden name of "Sarah" the letter writer! I've
often wondered if she was a CALDWELL, based on the way she writes the letters.
i.e. "our brother Joseph" etc.
Also, when I posted the brother'/sisters CALDWELL, I did not include my
Elizabeth. She was 04 Sep 1768 in Ireland, d 15 Feb 1859 in Crawford County,
Illinois. She and Andrew MONTGOMERY left SC abt 1805 and travelled through TN
& KY before arriving in IL about 1815-1816.
Bill - like Clarke - I never show the name to be David Robert...only Robert
(doesn't mean it taint so..)
re: the One version that you show CALDWELL, David Robert b 1811 - that is the
year Robert (Robin) was born - could explain mix up??
In the "letters" it mentions:
...and brother Robert's wife "Jane" died October 10, 1828.
...brother Robert's son Thomas is dead and he died 30th of October in the year
1829 and one of his children died on 23 of last May (letter written in Sep.
1830) and his son was called ????(can't read)
....(letter of 1836) All your brothers are all well. Your cousins have moved
away from these parts, except your brother John's and some of Robert's

father and mother were well the last time I heard from them. (don't know if
Nancy is married to a CALDWELL - or if she referred to her by her maiden
name???)

daughters are living with him and have bad health.
...(letter 1848) Your brother James's wife died and he lived awhile with his
