Hi All,
Four of us from other lists are trying to sort out Caldwells in early
Pennsylvania. I have three variations on people potentially related to
Hugh and Margery. The first is from my family's genealogy. The second
two come from genealogists I've been in touch with quite recently
(within the last 48 hrs). I don't yet have their permission for this
post, so they are referred to here as "Family 2" and "Family 3."
These
Caldwells are not my primary line, but a line that's quite important to
me. It's a little confusing, so I'm turning to you primary line
researchers for help.
Here's what we have so far:
DeFrance genealogy variant has:
1 Hugh Caldwell [m ?, Margery/Margarey Scott], b ?, d ?.
2 Samuel Caldwell, b 1755, Clearfield Co., PA, m ?, d ?
2 Hugh [or David] Caldwell [m ?, Rebecca ("Jane")
Allison], b ca 1759, Lancaster Co., PA, d ?.
2 Jane Caldwell [m 1783, John DeFrance, Cumberland, PA
(?)], b abt 1765, Franklin Co., PA, d 1813, Bulger, PA.
Family 2 genealogy variant has:
1. Samuel Caldwell (1708-1765) m 1729 Elizabeth Buchanan (1710 -
c1734).
2. Hugh Caldwell, Sr. (1730-?) m 1750 Margary Scott (?-?)
3. Hugh Caldwell, Jr. (1759-1829)m 1786 Jane Boyd (1766-1848)
4. Jane Caldwell (1803-1892) m 1823 George Leech (1788-1877)
Family 3 genealogy variant has:
1 Hugh Caldwell, b about 1730, Donegal, IRE, m 6/4/1751,
Margery Scott (b abt 1729).
2 Hugh Caldwell, b 2/7/1759, Lancaster Co, PA, m
2/20/1783, Jane Boyd (1766-1848), d 10/20/1829, Clearfield Co., PA.
3 Jane Caldwell, b 8/19/1803, Clearfield or
Lancaster Co., PA, m 1823, George Leech, Lancaster Co., PA, d 7/22/1892,
Clearfield Co., PA.
As you can see, we have common given names and locales (though I have an
inherent distrust of references to PA counties in the pre/post Rev War
era as county boundaries changed every couple of years back then). But
the dates and surnames don't square. Hugh and Margery SCOTT Caldwell are
probably the keys to cutting this "Gordian Knot."
Please don't ask for our sources for this info yet. So far I only have
the DF sources. They're on file with the DeFrance Family Record,
available on LDS microfiche.
As a listowner and subsciber to five other lists on RootsWeb, I get well
over 100 emails a day. I'm two weeks away from a family reunion I'm
hosting, and then I go on a much needed vacation. So it might take a
while to get back to you. I will forward any responses to the other
puzzled folks. They may get back in touch before I do, but I assure you
I/we will reply.
We thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.
Regards,
Larry
