HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE CALDWELL
(COLDWELL, COLWELL, CAULDWELL, CALDWELL)
FAMILY
Origin of Name and Early History
The surname of Caldwell and its variations is popularly interpreted as the obvious
"cold well". It is also explained as being derived from "cald",
meaning deserted and " well", meaning a town, referring to a deserted post along
the Roman roads of England. Another source indicates that the name Caldwell means a
watering place. The name of a place often became a family designation. Ancient designs
and armorial bearings of families baring the surname are wells, fountains, waves of the
sea and fishes, each suggestive of locality near water. The origin of the surname is
probably a synonym of wisdom and authority as the Scotch word, Coldwold was the Hazel wood
or the Divining rod which hung for a long lime in Bavarian Court rooms as the symbol of
authority and justice. The surname is spelled variously Cauldwell, Calwell, Colwell,
Coldwell, Cadwell, Caudwell. The origin of the Caldwells is not self evident. The name
can be traced to England, Scotland, Ireland and France for several centuries.
Among early residents in England are listed the names of Ricardus de Caldwell - 1379;
Johannes de Caldwell - 1379. Tradition states that one branch of the family emigrated to
Ireland in 1649 with Oliver Cromwell, whose grandmother was a Caldwell. In Scotland, the
Caldwells of Caldwell in Ayrshire had become prominent as early as 1349, when William
Caldwell, a prebendary of Glasgow became Lord Chancellor of Scotland. Records show that
another branch of the Caldwell family was living in Derbyshire and in Staffordshire,
England as early as 1500. Lawrence Caldwell sold his estate, "Caldwell Hall" to
Sir Oswald Mosely. At Rolleston in Staffordshire, an offshoot of Caldwell Hall, church
records show the names of children as follows: Arthur Caldwell, baptized 23 OCT 1580;
Aaron Cauldwell, baptized 21 JAN 1581; Dorothy Caldwell, baptized 30 OCT 1585. The
revocation of the Edict of Nantes resulted in a influx of French Huguenot refugees bearing
the surname (Corville, DeCoville) into England. Some members of these refugees removed to
Scotland raising large families. When King James VI of Scotland became King of England,
many of these families settled in the North of Ireland. The original surname has been
changed to Caldwell.
