<< If I'm not mistaken, the Caldwells were lowland Scots who settled in Ulster
and became what is known as Scotch-Irish when they immigrated here. The
Scots traditionally named their first son after his paternal grandfather and
the first daughter after her maternal grandmother. So there were a lot of
male first cousins with exactly the same name. It didn't stop there; there
was more to their naming tradition which I believe involved the next
generation back. >>
I hope this helps with the given name problem:
This is the true Scottish Standard Naming Pattern - published in "The Family
Tree," a free publication out of Moultrie, GA.
1st son is named after father's father
2nd son is named after mother's father
3rd son is named after the father
4th son is named after father's elder brother
1st daughter named after the mother's mother
2nd daughter named after father's mother
3rd daughter named after the mother
4th daughter named after mother's elder sister.
I don't know what happened if the had more than 4 sons or 4 daughters.
