Have you looked in Virginia for your Caldwells? Set is not the most
common given name, and would give some hope of discovery. The "Caldwell
Settlement" arrived from PA c. 1730--Presbyterians in search of
religious freedom. They settled in and around what is now Charlotte
County. When the area was over-run by English settlers from the coast
they moved on--many to Kentucky. Before leaving, in 1776, they filed a
petition with the Revolutionary governor from Prince Edward County. It
asked them to "disestablish the Church" and "depose the tyrant king."
This was treason, for which they could have been hanged.
There is some information about them, but not as much as I would
like. I'm seeking Thomas Caldwell who was still in Appomattox, VA in
1860. I think he's my man, but can't find him between there and Kansas
in 1880.

Hi;
I just 'joined' this list. My maiden name is Phoebe Caldwell - I married a
Dunn.
I was born and raised in Ashland, KY in NE Ky - on the Ohio River.
My father was Bert Cecil Caldwell, born in Catlettsburg, KY. He married
Elsie Robinson.
His father, Perry Edgar Caldwell, also from that area. He was married to
Myrtle Bell Dixon.
Perry's father was Andrew Caldwell, born 17 Feb 1848, Boyd County, KY.
Married to Sarah Katherine Alley.
Andrew's father was William Caldwell, b-12 Jan 1825 in VA. At some point he
moved to eastern KY and married Jane Burton.
William's father was Seth Caldwell. And that's where it stops.
We have no dates for Seth. The only information we have is from an elderly
aunt who was told Seth came from England in 1822 to VA. We don't know his
wife's name either. However, this aunt also said although he came from
England that his family was probably from Holland. At least that's what she
was told. No proof.
Any information will be GREATLY appreciated.
thanks....

Welcome to the list Phoebe,
I also was a CALDWELL.I was born and raised in Louisiana. But my grandpa
was born and raised in Tennessee. His dad was born in Kentucky or
Tennessee. His name was Walter Caldwell he was married to Ida Parish. He
died in his 30's from Diabetes. His wife Ida re-married to Harvey
Harris.Walter and Ida only had 2 children both boys,Vernie Addison
Caldwell and Loyd Aubrey Caldwell.Vernie stayed in Tennessee and my
Grandpa Loyd moved to Louisiana.I don't know if Walter had any brothers
or sisters,so I am stuck.None of the family thats living knows much
about this family.I assume they weren't a close family.Does any of these
people connect to any on your lineage?

Hello-o-o cousin!
Finally, I seem to have found a relative that I can connect to! I believe
our families connect at Andrew Caldwell. My records show that Oliver had the
following children -
Perry Caldwell, born in 1875
Florence E. Caldwell, born March 1878
John D. Caldwell, born April 1879
William J. Caldwell, born August 1881
Oliver A. Caldwell, born December 1884
Charles Caldwell, born December 1886
Sarah M. Caldwell, born June 1890
David C. Caldwell, born September 1891
As you can see, the fact that both Perry & Oliver had a father named Andrew
who was born in 1848 in Kentucky points to the fact that we are related.
My part of the family is very stingy with their information about our
ancestors.
I was born in Portsmouth, Ohio which is just across the Ohio river from
Greenup county, Kentucky.
My father's name is Charles Edward Caldwell, born January 17, 1933 in
Greenup county, Kentucky
His father's name was Thad Edward Caldwell, born July 13, 1908 in Lewis
county, Kentucky
wife - Julia Alice Nelson, born August 7, 1910 in White Oak, Kentucky
His father's name was Oliver Andrew Caldwell, born 1884 in Greenup county,
Kentucky,
wife -Cora Belle Spaulding, born 1891 in Grumm, W. Va.
His father's name was Andrew H. Caldwell, born 1848 in Kentucky,
wife - Sarah, born 1849 in Kentucky (I did not have her full name until
now).
And until your message, that is all that I had. I want to thank you for this
information. Now I can start trying to check connections outside of
Kentucky. If anyone else can connect to what I have listed, please let me
know.
