Ann:
The information I have says that Seth came to VA in 1822 from England.
Someplace in my notes I saw where someone had said they thought he came to
Jamestown area of VA. Can't prove that.
Again -- this has been handed down - and I know that sometimes the facts get
lost along the way.
Thanks for the tips,
Phoebe

Have you looked in Virginia for your Caldwells? Set is not the most
common given name, and would give some hope of discovery. The "Caldwell
Settlement" arrived from PA c. 1730--Presbyterians in search of
religious freedom. They settled in and around what is now Charlotte
County. When the area was over-run by English settlers from the coast
they moved on--many to Kentucky. Before leaving, in 1776, they filed a
petition with the Revolutionary governor from Prince Edward County. It
asked them to "disestablish the Church" and "depose the tyrant
king."
This was treason, for which they could have been hanged.
There is some information about them, but not as much as I would
like. I'm seeking Thomas Caldwell who was still in Appomattox, VA in
1860. I think he's my man, but can't find him between there and Kansas
in 1880.
