Hi Barbara,
Thanks for the info.
It looks like you're familiar with the time and region, so let me tell you where
I'm at and maybe you can point me in some right directions.
I have a Joseph who raised his family in Westmoreland, PA and died there about 1802.
I'm not sure where Joseph was born, but believed to be about 1740. Joseph m. Jane
McGrew, who came from a line of Quakers.
I am presuming that Joseph converted to Quaker as I've not been able to find any
parents for him in Quaker records thus far. Jane's family is relatively well
documented down her Quaker lines, but I've not been able to find the same for Joseph.
Where a William comes into this is from a lead who suggested that "my" Joseph
was a son of William Caldwell, and a grandson to George m. Jane Phillips. It seems
finding any data on George m. Jane Phillips is no easy task.
From that, I'm just following leads in both directions hoping to
meet somewhere in the middle. ;)
Thanks for any help! :)
John Caldwell
In answer to John Caldwell, I do not have much more.
Have a unsubstantiated yr of marriage of Wm and Margaret McCune of
1752.
There is a little one column query in a series of books of PA
queries by Engle. (sorry I don't have the page and volume handy) (do
have the page in the form a .gif if you would like a copy of it.)
But I can't vouch for the truth of it (in fact the years of b and d
for dau Margaret Caldwell Nichols are both wrong). Briefly, though,
it lists Wm and Margaret McCune's eleven children as Isabel, Thomas,
James, Jane, Margaret, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Eleanor, Martha,
and Agnes with greater detail on Isabel's children.
Don't know sons Joseph or Robert.
If you look here
http://www.jacksonville.net/~bjcox/caldwellgen.html
you will find the text of a court document that mentions some
children and spouses of William. It is proof that Wm is Margaret's
father.
I think Wm Caldwell fought in the Rev. War so that would be a
possible angle of search... that and every old PA document.
There are Caldwells in Crumrine's book VA Court Records in
Southwestern PA.
For example:
Yohogania co July 27th 1778
William Caldwell v William Fry, Thos. Lapsley S.B.
William Caldwell v Peter Reasner, Thomas Lapsley S.B.
and then some mentions in Ohio co 6 Apr 1778 "William Caldwell
enters special Bail wherein the Commonwealth is plaintiff & James
Caldwell Defendant, viz the Grand Jury Court next."
there is some more of that kind of thing... James and William both
given names mentioned.
If you can make anything of that let me know. Since Margaret
Caldwell married Mathias Nichols in what was OH county in 1796 there
might be something, if you can keep track of the changing county
lines...
Barbara
