John, here is some Joseph Caldwell information FWIW:
There is only one mention of a Joseph Caldwell in those Virginia court
records in Southwestern Pa and that would be mentioned at a Court held for
Augusta County at Pittsburg, Jan'y 16th 1776:
Admon of the Estate of Alexr. Miller, dec'd, is granted to John Colhoon,
Gent, he having Comp'd with the Law.
Ord that Geo Wilson, John Swearengen, John Harden, and Jos Caldwell, or any
3, App the Est.
The nearest mention of any Caldwell to this is same court was the 20 of
August 1776 where James Caldwell is one of many Commissioners of the Peace.
James is again mentioned in a similar capacity a month later.

There is a Will of James Caldwell in Ohio co VA dated 4-22-1802. Dev.:John,
Sam, James, Alex, Jos. Caldwell, Eliz. Williamson.

Carr to dress which Hatt he had purchaed
from the said Carr and supposed it
was made by him or his apprentice-
wich Hatt he has seen since and
but a short time ago in the possession
of a person called Jeremiah McCarty
and further this deposition sayeth not
(signed) Joseph Caldwell
(it goes on for another page and the date of his sub poena to make this
deposition was in 1799.

Joseph is an unusual Caldwell name compared to some but if your Joseph
raised his family and died in Westmoreland co PA in 1802 this may not be
your guy.
