I continue to search for the ancestors of Andrew CALDWELL, who married
Jerusha ELLINGTON in Russell County, Virginia and subsequently emigrated with
her and their ten children to Illinois, about 1830, along with other
Caldwells and Ellingtons. Andrew was a census taker in Virginia (Russell and
Lee Counties), and after the move to Darwin, Clark Co., Illinois, from Lee
County (where he appeared on the 1830 census) was one of three petitioners to
found Coles County, Illinois. After the death of Jerusha, he married Sinai
Sharp Shaw, and had two sons with her, Samuel and Amos. (Jerusha and Andrew
had 3 sets of twins among their ten children.) Later, Andrew married a Nancy
Walters on 26 Feb 1841 and settled in Randolph, Chester Co. Illinois, where
he died in 1844. His son Captain Henry Dickerson Caldwell, 5th Illinois
Cavalry, Civil War, is my ancestor (ggrandfather).
Andrew's siblings were James Camus Caldwell, John Dickenson Caldwell, Samuel
Caldwell, William Caldwell II, Polly (Mary) Caldwell Scott.
Andrew's father is supposedly a William, born 1759 in York Co., PA, later
living in Adams Co., PA before moving to Russell Co., VA. He is reputed to
have served in the Revolution under Cols. Stewart and Moore, enlisting in
1770 and being mustered out in 1781 in Trenton, NJ. He married Rebeckah LNU,
with whom he had the above children.
One theory has it that William is the child of Rev. Capt. James Caldwell, the
Revolutionary War hero, by a brief first marriage to a Mary LNU before he
married Hannah Ogden. Mary died when William was very young, and William was
raised by Cub Creek, VA relatives of Rev. James, who was a son of John and
Margaret Phillips Caldwell. I stress that this is a theory. There is also a
family story that William was originally from, or spent time in, Buncombe
County, NC
(According to research by Randy Jones, James C. Caldwell, the eldest sibling
of Andrew, was the child of Robert and Sarah LNU Caldwell, not William and
Rebeckah Caldwell. My research is from my first cousin by marriage, once
removed, Mary Soutar Caldwell, for the Lakewood Chapter of the Ohio Society
NSDAR, 1978).
If there are any descendants of William or Andrew, or of Robert and Sarah
Caldwell, who can clarify this mystery, I would be most grateful to hear from
them.
