Bonnie,
They were supposed to be from Scotland, three brothers, William,
James, & Joseph (and a possible 4th, Alexander), born there around
1680-1690, then moved to Ireland around 1700-5, probably living in
Antrim and/or Londonderry County, Ireland (poss. Ballymena) , then
coming to the US, at Lynn (or was it Ipswich? I don't have the book
at hand at the moment) around 1718 or so, then moving to southern NH
with the group of Scotch/Irish settlers. I wish I knew more about
the history of the latter part. I believe they had a deal before
arriving with land granted to them in NH, and many southern NH towns
bear Irish town names (as Antrim & Londonderry, for example).
There's nothing else known about them, as far as I know. I realize
this sounds an awful lot like the stories of the Caldwell families
that settled elsewhere in America. One of my guesses is that the
father of the brothers name was James (just by how the name shows up
in the brother's families), and that the mother may have been
Margaret (for the same reasons). On looking again, it could be John.
Oh well, this is another mystery that probably will never be solved!

Rich:
Your Caldwells were originally from Scotland? Where in Scotland and
what time period?

I can't find anything in my database on those families in Allegany County.
The family that I think was originally the topic of this thread was
of a James F. Caldwell (b. 5/23/1835 in Arlington, VT), son of Isaac
Coman Caldwell. Their son Frederick James was born in VT in 1861,
although they are on the E. Greenwich, NY 1895 directory. That might
just be where they were listed, not where they actually lived.
Aside from the northeast & north central NY families, I also have
Caldwells that lived in extreme southwest NY, but none around
Allegany Co. that I can find so far. The name Abel doesn't "sound"
like it would be of this family, but I could be wrong.
