"SIR JOHN CALDWELL fifth Baronet of Castle Caldwell. County Fermanaghn, Ireland. He
served in North America from 1774 to 1780 as an officer in the King's Eighth Regiment
of Foot, stationed at Fort Niagara and Fort Detroit. During this period he was elected
Chief of the Ojibwa Indians, who gave him the name Apatto, or Runner. After his return to
Ireland an unknown artist painted Caldwell dresses in Indian finery he brought back from
North America. Most of these Caldwell artifacts were acquired by Arthur Speyer Jr. and
ultimately by the National Museum of Man when it bought the Speyer Collection."
This is quoted from "Profiles of Canadian Indian Art" by Ted Brasser. I was
given this along with a copy of the painting. I have been trying to link this Caldwell to
the "Caldwell First Nation Ojibwe" in Ontario Canada. I need more history on the
tribe to help me connect this man or any other of the Caldwells that descended from the
Caldwell Chiefs. I have seen the names of CHIEF ROBERT CALDWELL, CHIEF WILLIAM (MADWAYOSH)
CALDWELL, CHIEF QUENESIS (SONSBAWEMINNO) CALDWELL and have seen references to a JOHN
CALDWELL in another old history book from Canada.
The Caldwell Band of Ojibwa were known as the Point Pelee Indians and live in that area
today. That is close to Detroit and not too far from Niagara Falls. How does this John
Caldwell connect to the Caldwell Band?
Any information on the Caldwell Band History or Descendency would be greatly appreciated!
