Martha,
The obituaries are posted for your use and by no means are you in trouble.
I transcribe the obits for my home county in Alabama. Randolph Publishing
retains the copyright but has given permission for the USGenWeb Project
Archives to store the files permanently for free access. I am only the contributor.
Now the cemetery listings are different, I could not post cemetery listings
already done by someone else, this would be an infringment on their
copyright. So in order to get the listings posted, I spent months walking the
cemeteries and transcribing them. These are contributed and copyrighted by
"me".
This protects them 'as a whole' from being picked up and used for profit.
Still, they are there for your use in finding your ancestors.
OK?

It was not I who brought up the copyright question, but I believe it was
Peter McCrae - - pmccrae(a)googlemail.com - - who answered my original query
directed to the Administrator. Our Administrator has not replied to our
concerns yet, and I do not know who the administrator of this list is.
Hopefully they will pick up this thread of concerns soon and present some
answers for us.
Peter seemed to think that one reason for the change in format was due to
copyright protection somehow. I questioned that (see previous posts). I
am not a copyright expert by any means, but it did not make sense to me that
an obit which was published in a public newspaper would be protected by
copyright! If anyone can prove it to me, I will be happy to know, as I
will be in a "heap of trouble" since I have copied many obits in connection
with my genealogy research!

I don't know anything about copyrights either but according to
"MARTHA"
below she seems to know. Let's ask her!
