Ancestry.com & RootsWeb make their money off of the hard
work of genealogy researchers who share their findings
with others.
Others trying to learn their lines, or share their lines,
or whatever, is the real draw to sites like this.
In other words, it is the social interaction and the
information that we share with each other that is the draw
that allows these sites to sell advertising.
I would venture to say that they make more money from
advertising than they do the sale of records and data
bases.
There would be copyright infringement on any of us if our
work was sold - and even if we give it to someone who, in
wanting to be a part of one of these sites, uploads our
data with theirs. Anyway, it can turn into a big ugly
mess.
So I'm going to call them out, and if they force Caldwells
to have to click over to read postings so that they can
sell advertising, then I'll add the same sort of software
that they use to
CaldwellGenealogy.com. It doesn't matter
to me because it's not about money - it's about Caldwells
connecting.
There is already a discussion forum at CaldwellGenealogy,
but it's not configured the same as here, and when it's
active it tends to get more heady than basic queries. If
there is a demand by Caldwells for a "query" forum, then
I'll add one and when it comes to Caldwell, then screw
these guys and their micromanaging BS.
Whatever you all want to do, just let me know.
Best regards,
John Caldwell
