Hey Dale! It's been a long time! How's your side of the family these days?
To Martha, I'm not the Admin, just a Caldwell Web geek who makes his living
online.
To Jane, individuals moving sites hosted on any of the genealogy hosts would
not have an impact on how the discussion forum works. I think that they're
giving you whatever answers either they can come up with or figure that any
"techie" sounding answers might be taken as reasonable/understandable.
The discussion forums were built on old "listserv"/majordomo software. It's
pretty basic stuff by today's standards, and I would assume that when they
first built the site they probably used simple freeware like a lot of
start-ups do. I would suspect that they updated it a bit here and there and
probably at sometime migrated over to a better server set, but kept the old
software because it worked and was basically free except for the time put
toward minor mods, etc.
Somebody somewhere - either on purpose (maybe as a marketing test) or on
accident (fiddling around with the freeware that runs the forums) - flipped
a switch.
If
is playing fast and loose and claiming copyright on other
people's work because they posted to a forum or anything else posted or
hosted, well, I know a few Caldwell attorney's who are very protective of
their original work and/or compilations. That sort of levels the playing
field of an obnoxious company taking advantage of good-will built over years
who thinks that their pockets are too deep for any of we great unwashed to
even image doing battle with such a Goliath.
Hopefully this is just a misguided test by a zealous marketing or business
development person. If traffic falls off the test failed, but they lost
good-will and "social site" contributors that generate the content that
drives the traffic. By then it's often too late to recoup....
Best,
John

Well said Cuz. It sounds to me from what I'm reading, that
anything sent to the forum is now being claimed by Ancestry
as being copyrighted, thus from what I understand it is their
property, so play by their rules. If true, be careful of what
you post on their board, as your work will become their property.

Ancestry.com & RootsWeb make their money off of the hard
work of genealogy researchers who share their findings
with others.
Others trying to learn their lines, or share their lines,
or whatever, is the real draw to sites like this.
In other words, it is the social interaction and the
information that we share with each other that is the draw
that allows these sites to sell advertising.
I would venture to say that they make more money from
advertising than they do the sale of records and data
bases.
There would be copyright infringement on any of us if our
work was sold - and even if we give it to someone who, in
wanting to be a part of one of these sites, uploads our
data with theirs. Anyway, it can turn into a big ugly
mess.
So I'm going to call them out, and if they force Caldwells
to have to click over to read postings so that they can
sell advertising, then I'll add the same sort of software
that they use to
CaldwellGenealogy.com. It doesn't matter
to me because it's not about money - it's about Caldwells
connecting.
There is already a discussion forum at CaldwellGenealogy,
but it's not configured the same as here, and when it's
active it tends to get more heady than basic queries. If
there is a demand by Caldwells for a "query" forum, then
I'll add one and when it comes to Caldwell, then screw
these guys and their micromanaging BS.
Whatever you all want to do, just let me know.
Best regards,
John Caldwell
