3-9-1912 Abbeville, Louisiana Meridional : George W. Caldwell died
Tuesday morning at 75 years 9 months, and 25 days. His father was a
native of Kentucky and an original settler [locally] had a large
plantation on Bayou Vermilion. He, his wife and a number of slaves
were victims of an epidemic of Asiatic cholera in 1842. George was
orphaned at an early age. He was one of the first to enlist in 1861
and was a private in Hays Brigade. He served in Virginia throughout
the war. He fought under Stonewall Jackson in some of the bloodiest
battles. George located in New Iberia after the war as a brick mason
and contractor. Moved to Abbeville where he operated a large
brickyard for years.
George W. Caldwell married Eliza Ewing, daughter of Col. Elijah
Ewing. She and five children survive him: (1) Hon. V. L. Caldwell
member of the state legislature and President of the Erath Sugar Co.;
(2) Summa Caldwell, contractor; (3) Mrs. L. Nussbaum, wife of the
editor of the Crowley News; (4) Mrs. Alice Baltzer; and (5) Thomas
Caldwell of Houston.
