The location of Castle Caldwell is not quite accurate. It is not so near
Inniskillen at all. It is at the West end of Loch Erne and four kilometers
east of Belleek. I've been there several times and have taken scores of
photos from outside and inside of every inch of the castle. The castle is
somewhat in poor shape but not nearly as bad as it first appears. The wooden
floors collapsed with time and some interior walls suffered from lack of
support. At first glance it would appear the vegatation had overcome the
interior but just inside the front doors was an atrium. It does need tidied
up a bit. <G>
Alan Caldwell, whose folks were from there.
BTW, I contacted and then visited the Northern Ireland government department
in whose custody the castle now resides and secured an agreement to begin
restoring the castle. I then met with local business people in Belleek to
secure an agreement as to how it would be done and only for the benefit of
the local area.
Considerable funds have been designated and I secured an agreement from the
N.I. officials for the aid of the forestry people for assistance.
I also was given old photos and a copy of the original floor plan. It was a
lovely castle and hopefully will be again.
