I have new Information from my Mother-in-law that shocked me. She says
her husband's (Basil Vincent Lane) mother (Blanche Ella Caldwell Lane)
had a Silver Cup which was given at some period of time to the family or
those that had come over on the Mayflower. Now that goes back to the
early 1600's. That is close to another 200 years. She believes that it
was the Caldwell line that came over. James (see below) father was
supposed to have been born in New Hampshire and his mother in Mass. Does
anyone have any suggestions on how to research that far back????

I have come to a dead end on my CALDWELL family. The
furthest back I
have is: JAMES CALDWELL born June 12, 1815 in Allegany, Cattaraugus
County, NY, and died December 04, 1882 in Cattaraugus County, NY.
Cattaraugus County is in Western New York (close to the Pennsylvania
border). I am not positive about the birth location and I don't
know any
way to prove it being that far back. From the 1880 Census, I found
out
that his father was born in N.H. and his mother was born in Ma..
He married MARY HAYFORD January 22, 1843, daughter of JOHN
HAYFORD and
LYDIA BROWN. She was born June 30, 1819 in Cattaraugus County, NY,
and
died July 06, 1903. The property that we live on in Western New
York,
was owned by James and I believe he bought it from an Ohio family in
November 1857. (I have a copy of the deed).
The other dead end I have on this family are his children.
He had the
following children, which I have not been able to find anything more
on:
Children of JAMES CALDWELL and MARY HAYFORD are:
JANE CALDWELL, b. December 22, 1843, Cattaraugus
County, NY.
LORRAINE CALDWELL, b. February 02, 1845, Cattaraugus
County,NY; d.
April 13, 1873.
MARY CALDWELL, b. September 23, 1846, Cattaraugus
County; d. July 31,
1848.
JAMES B. CALDWELL, b. October 03, 1849, Cattaraugus
County, NY; d.
October 26, 1884.
Census: August 22, 1850, Farmersville, NY 3 children
WELD CALDWELL, b. May 15, 1851, Cattaraugus County.
MARY A. CALDWELL, b. June 11, 1854, Cattaraugus
County 1880 Census
says about 1859; d. November 28, 1877? Had married an ARCHIE ETSLER
and
had a son born in Oct. 1875, and possibly a daughter EDNA ETSLER
born in
1877.
HENRY W. CALDWELL, b. April 14, 1856, Farmersville,
NY; d. December 02,
1934.
CARSON CALDWELL, b. August 03, 1858; d. July 28,
1895.
The only family line that I have anything on, is the Henry
Caldwell
line. Henry owned the Farm we live on after James died. It was
passed on
through the family and we own it now.
Can anyone look up this family in any of the following
Census:
1840 - JAMES CALDWELL probably in Cattaraugus County in New
York.
Hopefully with his family.
1860 - JAMES CALDWELL with spouse and any of the 7 children
in
Farmersville, NY Cattaraugus County. Also, individual children if
possible.
1870 - JAMES CALDWELL with spouse and any of the individual
children.
They could have traveled anywhere!!!!!
TIA,
