Hi,
Thanks for offering to share your research. I would be interested in
receiving a synopsis of what you have found, if it's not too much trouble.
My gg grandfather, James Peckham CALDWELL was born in Maryland in 1793. His
father was supposedly Dr. James CALDWELL, who lived on the eastern shore of
Maryland and was a physician and a planter. James P. had two sisters that I
know of: Jane (who married James CALDER, but James died in MD leaving Jane
with a young son, Robert James CALDER), and Anna Maria (who married Samuel
D. WALTMAN in KY). Their mother's name is not known, and the three siblings
plus Jane's son apparently left for KY in about 1819 and lived in
Hopkinsville, Christian Co. where they stayed until they all moved to
Brazoria Co. TX in about 1831. My gg grandfather, James P. raised Jane's
son, Robert J. CALDER.
Family tradition says this family was Scot-Irish. I don't know when they
arrived in Maryland, or in the U.S. for that matter. The siblings were
Methodist. Did any of the family you are researching have any brothers from
Maryland named James who might be my James P.'s father?
Thanks for your (or anyone's) input.
Marianne
Several years ago, through this list I believe, I received an e-mail
with a
copy of a brief history written about our Caldwell line. It was written in
1907 by the eldest grandson (a former attorney/judge/bank president) of the
eldest male in a family of six siblings who emigrated from County Down,
Ireland ca 1800, settling in Ross Co., OH. A number of us (descendants, that
is) have collaborated to work on documenting both the author and our line
(the youngest male, Crawford--his mother's surname). We have not yet been
able to trace the family back to Ireland and/or Scotland (where their father,
William Crawford, was born) but I would be happy to share the history as well
as any of my documentation with anyone who might be interested.
