John, etc.
Right on all counts. I had a nodding acquaintance with Mrs. Walters
through her daughter. That was at least fifteen years ago and the
rumors continue. I too have a nice collection of Caldwell folklore
that I keep for laughs.
If you want the real culprit it is Gustave Anjou. All that Barbarossa-
Cromwell-etc. stuff is in his Caldwell genealogy, published some years
before all the others. He made a nice living inventing and selling
pedigrees to the well-to-do under that false name. His particular
skill was in making them look authentic. A list of Gustave Anjou
genealogies is at
. LDS
once had many of his fraudulent genealogies on film but will no longer
circulate them. I believe there is even a book about him with the
title "Gustave, We Hardly Knew You."
As Mark Twain said, "A lie can circle the World before the Truth can
get its boots on."

It's been a while since I've posted to this forum, and
it's usually
the same
thing that brings me back....
There were no "3 brothers from France"; there were no Caldwell muslim
pirates; there is no silver challis; Caldwells are not related to
Queen
Elizabeth, nor was Oliver Cromwell's mother, aunt, sister, cousin,
wife, or
pet dog ever a Caldwell. Caldwells were not Albigenses, Waldenses, or
Huguenots. And, there is no such thing as a "family" Coat of Arms....
I've collected a total of five "Caldwell Legends" that are, for the
most
part, variations on a similar theme.
http://caldwellgenealogy.com/stories/myths.html
The first legend is "ONE CALDWELL FAMILY HISTORY" by Mrs. Harold
Walters of
New Ross, IN.
Mrs. Walters starts, "In 1400 there were two notorious brothers,
pirates,
named Barbarosa". The truth is, the Barbarossa's didn't come on the
scene
until the 1500s.... oh, and they happened to be muslim (yes, I
know, and I
intentionally didn't capitalize "muslim"). I'm sorry, but it all
goes down
hill from there....
The second legend from "Virginia Soldiers of 1776"
http://caldwellgenealogy.com/stories/myths2.html continues a French
connection, but this time, instead of coming from France, they
settled in
France. It's in this version that they become Huguenots, were
benefactors
of Elizabeth I with Oliver Cromwell's mother being a Caldwell.
The third legend appears to be an amalgam that for many years was
hosted on
Michael Caldwell's Geocities site. After I reposted the third
legend here
http://caldwellgenealogy.com/stories/myths3.html Michael asked to
include
some additional comments that are found in blue....
The fourth legend comes from, "The House of Waltman and its Allied
Families...." by Lora S. La Mance and published by The Record
Company, St.
Augustine, Florida, 1928 & excerpts the Historical Collections of
Joseph
Habersham, D. A. R., Volume I

Again with French brothers, but this time in the late 1300s (Wm
Caldwell was
Lord Chancellor of Scotland in something like 1348 - you don't just
drop in
from France and become Lord Chancellor of Scotland, but I
digress....).
This version has James I giving over land to Caldwells in Scotland.
The
only problem with this is that Caldwells had already started planting
Ireland from Scotland before James I or the Ulster Plantations.
Again with Cromwell's mother a Caldwell, but this time the 3
brothers rode
with Cromwell to Ireland.... huh? Sorry, but there is evidence that
Caldwells had been planting Ireland since Elizabeth, and maybe as
early as
Henry VIII.
This time a Caldwell marries a Stewart.... Actually, there is some
Caldwell
association to the Stewart line dating back to something like the
1100-1220s
near Paisley in.... wait for it.... Scotland....
The fifth version comes from, "The Old Free State" (A Contribution
to the
History of Lunenburg County and Southside Va) By Landon C. Bell. Vol
II The
William Byrd Press, Inc Printers, Richmond , Va 1927
http://caldwellgenealogy.com/stories/myths5.html
This time Caldwells were native to Italy but moved to France before
finally
settling in Scotland in the 1600s.... The heirloom cup surfaces
again in
this version, and this time it's Cromwell's grandmother that was a
Caldwell.
Here's an inconvenient reality of genealogy - there are no "Easy"
button.
Serious genealogy takes time and research. The truth is usually not
as
romantic as knights & pirates, or even religious persecution. If
you have
any of that in your citable line, consider it a bonus, but don't
waste a lot
of time looking for it for Caldwell....
Whatever you do, please don't propagate misinformation without
qualifying it
as such. New people enter genealogy all of the time and it's not
fair to be
confusing anyone with the obvious bunk that are these ridiculous
myths....
I'm happy to discuss, but don't frequent this forum so you'll have to
contact me directly or post to the forum at

John Caldwell
