Joanne once again I am reminding you that we have no idea of where Ferguson
was born. There has been a story that he came from Ohio Co. in WVa. Until
we know for sure, it can put a damper on finding his birth place if we say
he was born in Va. Lorna

This sounds interesting!! I have been unable (also other genealogist
for
over 40 years) to find my Ferguson CALDWELL'S parents.
All we have to go on is that he was born in VA. And in 1820 he wrote in
his
school book that his fathers name was William and 2 sisters
Drucilla and Susan had married. Ferguson born Sept. 2 1799 and died June
8,
1845. After he died his wife had a son and named him Ferguson J. G.
Caldwell
In Hardy Co. (W) VA. I have been able to find him up to 1880 in TN with
wife
and 9 children. Then a brick wall again. Now about when he went into the
civil war he changed his name to John Ferguson CALDWELL. I still need more
proof on this for those reading this. But in letters written by relatives
during that time they call him JF. In the marriage records that a Caldwell
Relative
went to TN sent me he Was also using John Ferguson CALDWELL married in
1866.

Subject: [CALDWELL-L] Caldwell of Vaughn's Creek, Prince Edward County, VA
Is anyone on this list interested in the Caldwells who lived on Vaughn’s
Creek in Prince Edward County, Virginia in the mid- to late- 1700s? I am
searching for a connection between them and John Finley, who lived in
Augusta County from the late 1730s until about 1765, when he moved to
Prince Edward County.
I have done extensive research on this John Finley and he was married
first to ____ Thomson, daughter of Rev. John Thomson; they had at least
six children. John married a second time Mary (presumably Caldwell)
before 1750, and they had at least three children. John and Mary Finley
moved to Prince Edward County and bought property on Vaughn’s Creek from
Jacob Garrett 15 June 1765. His son, William, also bought property near
Vaughn’s Creek from a John Caldwell on 19 August 1765. Another son,
George, was given 200 acres on branches of Vaughn’s Creek by his
father-in-law, Thomas Fulton, on 28 April 1769. Coincidentally, a John
Caldwell, who had been living on Vaughn’s Creek in Prince Edward County
went to live with his son, David, in 1766. David also lived on Vaughn’s
Creek. This is documented in a lengthy Augusta County Chancery case,
Watson vs. Caldwell, that spanned the years 1785 to 1804. On 25 March
1796 David Caldwell stated that his father lived with him from about 1766
until his death about August 1789, at the age of 94 year 6 months. The
elder John Caldwell’s birth year is, therefore, estimated as 1695.
Is this elder John Caldwell the father of Mary who married John Finley?
